Short answer: these two brands are most often not competitors but complementary. UniFi’s strength is in the wireless ecosystem and management comfort, MikroTik’s strength is in routing depth and flexibility. In the SMB space in Turkey, one of the healthiest architectures is using the two together. First an honest comparison, then which profile fits what.
The DNA of the two brands
- Ubiquiti / UniFi: The “Apple approach”. A sleek ecosystem managed from a single controller interface: access points, switches, gateways (the Dream Machine family), cameras. Setup is fast, the interface is visual, and roaming and channel planning are close to automatic. The trade-off: limited configuration depth at the gateway layer; comfort drops once you step outside the ecosystem.

Recommendation by profile
- No technical team, standard office: End-to-end UniFi. Comfort and a single panel are valuable; if there is no advanced routing need, it means you would not use MikroTik’s flexibility anyway.
- Budget-sensitive SMB, multi-WAN, serious QoS, special scenarios: MikroTik gateway. You get many times more networking capability for the same budget.
- Crowded wireless environment + strong networking need (hotel, school, open office): Hybrid (below).
- ISP/WISP, many branches, structures that want automation: MikroTik; UniFi gateways do not play in this league.
- Those who want camera + WiFi + network in a single ecosystem: UniFi’s cohesion (including Protect) is attractive, provided you accept the gateway limits.
Hybrid architecture: the answer we deploy most
The MikroTik router + UniFi AP combination brings together the best of both worlds:
- MikroTik at the gateway: NAT, firewall, dual WAN failover, VPN tunnels, queues, VLAN routing.
- UniFi APs on the wireless side: central SSID/roaming management from the controller, with staff-guest separation carried to MikroTik via VLANs.
- The controller runs on a small server/VM inside the network; the APs do not depend on it to broadcast.
The only zone to watch in this setup is the initial installation: the UniFi APs finding the controller (inform address/DHCP option 43) and the VLANs being defined consistently on both sides. After that it runs for years without being touched.

Ease of use and WiFi ecosystem cohesion. In the UniFi controller, APs are adopted within minutes, and roaming and channel management are handled from a visual interface. If the team lacks deep networking knowledge, UniFi's learning curve is noticeably gentler.
What is MikroTik's biggest advantage over UniFi?+
Depth of routing and configuration. BGP/OSPF, advanced firewalling, the queue system (QoS), script/API automation, and edge-case scenarios are far more powerful on MikroTik; similar hardware capacity usually comes at a lower cost. Deployments looking for flexibility at the gateway layer turn to MikroTik.
Is a controller required for UniFi?+
For setup and central management, yes: you need a software controller (on your own server/cloud) or hardware such as a Cloud Key/Dream Machine. After setup, the APs keep broadcasting even with the controller offline, but monitoring, configuration changes, and the guest portal require the controller.
Which one do you recommend for a small office?+
If there is no technical team and the need is a standard office network, end-to-end UniFi is a comfortable choice. If there is budget sensitivity, multi-WAN, serious QoS, or special scenarios, a MikroTik gateway + an AP layer as needed gives a better result. When in doubt, a hybrid structure combines the best of both worlds.
