MikroTik is one of the most talked-about brands in networking: a price tag at the level of a home router, and a feature list at the level of an enterprise backbone. In this article we explain what MikroTik is, how RouterOS works, the device families, and which device is the right choice in which scenario.
What is MikroTik?
MikroTik is a network technology company founded in 1996 in Riga, Latvia. It has two core products:
- RouterOS: an operating system that combines routing, firewall, VPN server, hotspot and bandwidth management in a single package.
- RouterBOARD: the hardware family that runs RouterOS, ranging from desktop routers to rack-mounted backbone routers.
MikroTik is especially common in ISP/WISP infrastructures, hotels, factories and multi-branch businesses. The reason is simple: far more networking capability for the same budget.
What does RouterOS do?
RouterOS is a network operating system built on the Linux kernel. On a single device it runs:
- Routing: static routes, OSPF, BGP; multi-WAN and load balancing
- Firewall and NAT: layered filtering, address lists, port forwarding
- VPN: WireGuard, IPsec/IKEv2, L2TP, SSTP, OpenVPN
- Hotspot: captive portal, vouchers, RADIUS integration
- QoS: per-user and per-service bandwidth management
- Wireless management: centralized WiFi control with CAPsMAN
Management is done through Winbox (a desktop tool), WebFig (a browser interface), SSH/terminal and the API. This flexibility makes MikroTik extremely well suited to automation: with our own platform, we centrally managed more than 50,000 devices over this API.
MikroTik device families: which one is for what?
A “MikroTik device” is not a single product but a broad catalog. Here is a practical map:
| Family | What it is | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| hEX | Wired router | Home, small office, branch gateway |
| hAP | Router with WiFi | Home and small-office wireless network |
| RB series (e.g. RB5009) | High-performance router | Mid-sized business, multi-WAN setups |
| CCR | Cloud Core Router, multi-core backbone | ISP, data center, hundreds of branches |
| CRS | Cloud Router Switch (RouterOS) | Managed enterprise switch, VLAN infrastructure |
| CSS | Simple switch with SwOS | Basic port expansion |
| wAP / cAP | Access point | In-office WiFi coverage, centrally managed with CAPsMAN |
| LHG / SXT / Wireless Wire | Point-to-point wireless bridge | Building-to-building links, rural access |
| CHR | Virtual RouterOS (VM) | Cloud, data center, lab |
The “MikroTik modem” misconception
A frequently searched question: is MikroTik a modem? It is not. A modem (or an ONT on fiber lines) converts the line’s signal to Ethernet; MikroTik is the router that handles routing, security and network management behind that connection. The correct setup is usually as follows: the operator’s modem is put into bridge mode, the PPPoE session is established on the MikroTik, and all control of the network is consolidated on a single device.
License model: no subscription
The quiet reason MikroTik is loved in the enterprise world is its license model. On physical devices the RouterOS license comes with the device, is valid for life, and there is no annual fee. Features such as BGP, VPN, firewall and hotspot are not locked behind an additional license wall. On the virtual side, CHR is licensed separately (p1/p10/p-unlimited tiers).
Who should use MikroTik?
- SMBs: firewall + VPN + QoS on a single device; low total cost of ownership.
- Hotels and cafes: hotspot, vouchers and guest network isolation built in.
- Factories: separating production, office and camera networks with VLAN segmentation.
- ISPs and WISPs: PPPoE, bandwidth management and backbone routing; the de facto standard of the sector.
- Multi-branch setups: headquarters-to-branch tunnels with WireGuard/IPsec, centrally managed.
The other side of the coin: RouterOS’s flexibility means a learning curve. A misconfigured MikroTik, with services exposed to the internet and a weak firewall, is a serious security risk. To take advantage of the device’s power safely, either set aside time to learn it or leave the setup to a certified team.
Next step
Once you have settled on MikroTik, the next questions become “which model” and “who will set it up.” From model selection to secure installation and 24/7 operation, we take on the entire process with our MikroTik Support & Installation service. For those who prefer to set it up themselves, our blog has guides ready on firewall rules, VLAN configuration, hotspot setup and CAPsMAN.

Sıkça Sorulan Sorular
Is MikroTik a modem?+
No. MikroTik devices are not modems; they are routers. The signal conversion for your internet line is handled by a modem or ONT, and MikroTik manages your network behind that connection. In a typical setup the modem is put into bridge mode, and MikroTik takes over the PPPoE session and all network management.
Does MikroTik make switches?+
Yes. The CRS (Cloud Router Switch) series consists of managed switches that run RouterOS, while the CSS series uses the simpler SwOS software. CRS switches support enterprise features such as VLAN, LACP and Layer 3 routing.
What country is the MikroTik brand from?+
MikroTik is a Latvia-based company founded in 1996, with its headquarters in Riga. It develops the RouterOS operating system and the RouterBOARD hardware family, and its products are used in ISP and enterprise networks worldwide.
Is the RouterOS license paid, and is there an annual fee?+
On physical MikroTik devices the RouterOS license comes with the device and is valid for life; there is no annual fee. For virtual use, CHR (Cloud Hosted Router) is licensed separately. License levels (Level 4 to 6) determine capacity limits such as the number of concurrent tunnels.
Is MikroTik suitable for home use?+
Yes; the hAP series of WiFi routers is designed for homes and small offices. That said, MikroTik's real strength is configuration flexibility, and that flexibility brings a learning curve. The default out-of-the-box configuration is a safe starting point, while advanced features require some knowledge.
How does MikroTik differ from the classic enterprise brands?+
The most striking differences are price/performance and the license model: with MikroTik, features are not locked behind a subscription wall; BGP, VPN, firewall and hotspot all come on the same device at no extra cost. In return, the official support network is thinner; for enterprise use, working with an experienced integrator closes that gap.
